Andy Murray performed a stunning comeback against Yoshihito Nishioka in the first round of the 2020 US Open.

Andy Murray played solid tennis last week at the Western & Southern Open and it seems that he will be able to continue in a similar style also at the US Open. The match started off slowly with both players playing good tennis on their own serve. Not much happened for the majority of the set until Nishioka broke Murray to give himself the lead. He would go on to win the 1st set 6-4.
The 2nd set was eerily similar to the 1st set. Murray's struggles continued as he simply could not find a way to better Nishioka. The Japanese kept playing his game which gave him the lead and the secured the 2nd set as well. Again the score was 6-4.
The 3rd set was a battle. Nishioka managed to jump out to a lead but he could not hang onto it as Murray tied it at 3-3. Nishioka had a chance to wrap up the match at 4-4 but he failed to convert a breakpoint. After 4 more games, we ended up in a tiebreak. Murray controlled it from the start and he managed to win it 7-5. He screamed out a celebration showing emotion rarely seen from the Brit.
The 4th set was a similar affair as the 3rd set. Both players very focused on their own serve not allowing an inch to their opponent. Nishioka came close to victory late in the set when he had a match point but Murray saved it. It boosted Murray's confidence who would go on to win the 4th set after another tiebreak.
The Scot was down by a break also in the fifth set. But once again, he managed to show his masterclass and come back to eventually win the match 4-6, 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(4), 6-4 in 4 hours and 40 minutes. Murray will take on the winner of the match between the 15th-seeded Auger-Aliassime and Monteiro in the second round.
