Felix Auger-Aliassime is the latest seed to fall in Monte-Carlo as
Lorenzo Musetti proved better than the Canadian 6-2 7-6(2).
Felix Auger-Aliassime had a horrific 2021 clay season which was a huge surprise considering his partnership with Toni Nadal for that part of the year and 2022 is not looking much better. Under the watchful eye of Uncle Toni, Auger-Alaissime produced another lacklustre performance against an energetic and fired up Musetti.
The Italian grew up on clay and loves playing on the surface which he demonstrated in the first set by jumping out to an early lead. The Italian was very solid overall playing a very balanced style of tennis. He attacked Auger on his 2nd serve winning the majority of those points. He also converted both break points he had as Auger never quite found his rhythm.
After taking the first set with 6-2 Musetti relaxed a bit and Auge used that to take an early 3-1 lead. The crucial game in the 2nd set happened at 3-1 when Auger failed to hold his serve in a 10-minute game. After breaking back and making it 3-3 Musetti started to roll again and only by chance was Auger able to avoid getting broken.
He dragged himself to the tiebreak but in it, it was the Italian who proved better easily besting the Canadian 7-2. Auger continues to struggle on clay as Musetti moves on to face Schwartzman.
