Belgium was the first team to advance from the second place and they faced 2019 Davis Cup Finals winner, Spain. But the ATP Cup is a different competition and Belgium was hoping for stopping Spain's dominance.
Roberto Bautista gave his country early lead after he defeated Kimmer Coppejans in a first singles match. Bautista was supposed to play Steve Darcis first, but Belgium changed nomination what did not trouble the Spaniard on his road to victory. Bautista remained without losing a set this week when he defeated Coppejans 6-1, 6-4.
Spain had a good chance of securing a win already after 2 matches when Rafael Nadal was facing David Goffin. However, world number 1 stumbled the first time this week. Goffin defeated the Spaniard 6-4, 7-6 after 2 hours and 24 minutes.
Unlike in the tie between Russia and Argentina, which was one-sided, the last semifinalist was decided by the doubles. Gille & Vliegen were facing Carreno-Busta & Nadal, who wanted to pay back for his singles loss. And he managed to do so when the Spaniards managed to defeat their opponents 6-7, 7-5 and 10-7 after more than 2 hours. In the semifinals, Spain will meet Australia.
