The
Next Gen ATP FInals have suffered a fresh blow with
Jakub Mensik withdrawing from the tournament which is due to take place between 17-21 December. The indoor hard court event established in 2017 will take place in Jeddah albeit is likely set to move away in short order.
On social media, they confirmed that Mensik is the latest big name to withdraw after it was confirmed also that Joao Fonseca would not play. The Brazilian though has not ended his season as such with him playing in Miami but will not play in the season ender for those 21 and under.
"Jakub Mensik has withdrawn from the 2025 Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF due to medical reasons. We wish Jakub a speedy recovery and good preparation for the 2026 season," they penned.
The highest ranked player now involved is Learner Tien who is World No.28. Fonseca was the defending champion having won the 2024 singles title defeating Tien in the championship match 2-4, 4-3(8), 4-0, 4-2 with the tournament following a first to four format over the typical first to six of the top tournaments.
Often also a hot bed when it comes to quirky changes they are looking to add to the sport, it often offers big prize money while it has taken place in Saudi Arabia but now with the advent of the Masters 1000 tournament taking place there, they are looking to move it presumably with Jeddah also in line as one of the cities to host that new event.
The Main Draw round-robin will begin on Wednesday 17 December with the semi-finals taking place on Saturday 20 December and 21 December is going to be the final of the tournament. The draw will be made on December 14 so it is only a few days away until the event meaning Mensik withdrew with enough time to get another player in.
That being 2007 born Justin Engel with Alexander Blockx, Dino Prizmic, Martin Landaluce, Nicolai Budkov Kjaer, Nishesh Basavareddy and Rafael Jodar are among those now to qualify meaning apart from if Tien wins through we will get a surprise winner but with him being an ATP title winner, he is certainly the class of the field.
