Nick Kyrgios played a super solid match to defeat good friend Thanasi Kokkinakis in round one of the US Open 6-3 6-4 7-6(4).
The two-hour match was a very good one as the good friends delivered a proper show. Both Kyrgios and Kokkinakis played well in this match but the older Aussie was simply better when it mattered more. The first set was pretty competitive, early on both had their game going but towards the end, Kyrgios took control 6-3.
The 2nd set was in some ways similar but Kyrgios took the early lead and reserved himself to serving well rather than pushing the issue too much. Kokkinakis was able to find a good rhythm in the 2nd set which would prove very useful in the final set.
The final one was a really great one as we saw good stuff from Kyrgios and Kokkinakis keeping up. Serves dominated and despite facing 3 break points, Thanasi was able to force a tiebreak. It was a close one and only point decided it with Kyrgios escaping 7-4.
A solid match from both as they both had over 30 winnners and over 10 aces.
