Leylah Fernandez opened her
US Open campaign with a win over Oceane Dodin 6-3 6-4 to move on into the 2nd round.
Fernandez made her first appearance at the US Open since losing in the final to Emma Raducanu last year. It was a fairly decent draw and a chance to take on Dodin who is a solid player but not outside of the clay courts. She did put up a very good effort in this one not getting thrashed by Fernadez who was really good.
The whole match was competitive despite the Canadian putting on a show from the baseline hitting the ball really well. It looked as good as last year at times with Leylah finishing with 26 winners and 9 unforced errors.
Dodin was comparable with 25 winners but also 24 mistakes. In both sets, Leylah had early leads but in both sets, Dodin was able to fight back and keep the match competitive but the French player was never able to wrestle control away from Fernandez who stayed on top and closed out the match in two.
