Nick KyrgiosMiami Open campaign came to an abrupt end after a tough defeat to Karen Khachanov, 7-6(3), 6-0. The Australian had made a promising start with a solid first-round win, but this time the 22nd seed proved too much for him.

There was a stark contrast between the two sets — the first was tightly contested, with Kyrgios having chances to pull ahead, while the second saw the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up completely fall out of the match as Khachanov played near-perfect tennis.

Khachanov edges tense opener in tiebreak

When Kyrgios’ serve clicks, it remains one of the best on Tour, and despite his two-year absence from the courts, he has been gradually finding his rhythm, showing greater effectiveness in one of his strongest weapons. Early on, he breezed through his service games without giving Khachanov any break opportunities.

The Russian, meanwhile, faced his first break points when trailing 2-3 but managed to escape a dangerous 15-40 situation. From there, Khachanov held comfortably and at times seemed closer to breaking than his opponent.

With neither player surrendering serve, the set headed into a tiebreak. Kyrgios quickly grabbed a 2-0 lead with a mini-break but lost his edge on serve soon after. Khachanov responded by winning three consecutive points on return, eventually clinching the set 7-6(3).

Khachanov crushes Kyrgios with flawless second set

The second set was entirely one-sided, with Kyrgios seemingly disconnected from the match. Khachanov dominated behind his serve, landing 93% of first serves and winning 85% of them. He also claimed the only point he played behind his second serve.

On the other hand, Kyrgios managed just a 37% first-serve percentage, winning only 50% of those points and a mere 11% behind his second serve. The Russian secured three consecutive breaks in a set that lacked real competition.

With just two winners apiece, Kyrgios’ unforced errors proved decisive — 10 compared to Khachanov’s solitary mistake. The Australian never even managed to push a game to deuce, winning just six points across the set. Khachanov delivered a bagel to seal the victory 7-6(3), 6-0, booking a third-round clash with 14th seed Grigor Dimitrov.
