Nick Kyrgios unable to finish his match against Botic Van de Zandschulp, exits Indian Wells after retiring while trailing 7-6[9-7], 3-0. The 2022 Wimbledon runner-up continues to struggle with injuries, raising doubts about his future after a troubled start to the year.
After two seasons away from competition, Kyrgios had hoped to leave his injuries behind and return to top-level tennis. However, physical problems continue to haunt him, forcing another retirement—this time due to an ongoing wrist injury. As a result, Van de Zandschulp advances to the second round, where he will face Novak Djokovic.
It was a shaky start for Kyrgios (ranked No. 1099), playing only his third tournament of the year after losses at the Brisbane International and Australian Open. In Melbourne, he had already struggled with wrist pain, and recent signs suggested the issue had not fully healed. This raised serious concerns about his physical readiness for Tennis Paradise.
In a first set full of break points, Van de Zandschulp capitalized on his chances—securing two breaks in a row and racing to a 4-1 lead. Kyrgios, despite his usual tricky shots, managed to turn things around, winning the next four consecutive games and taking advantage of two out of three break opportunities given by the Dutchman.

At 5-5, Kyrgios began showing signs of frustration, shouting at his box and even responding to comments from the crowd. Still, he kept his composure and forced a tiebreak. After squandering a set point on his opponent’s serve, he ultimately lost the set 7-6[9-7].
After an entertaining first set, things quickly went downhill for Kyrgios. Van de Zandschulp maintained his strong service games, while the Australian lost rhythm on the return. The pain became more evident, limiting his movement and shot execution.
The Dutchman secured an early break and surged ahead 3-0, at which point Kyrgios—visibly emotional—decided to retire from the match in tears, devastated by yet another injury setback.
Despite flashes of brilliance and his signature showmanship, Kyrgios was once again undone by wrist pain. As of now, he is still listed for the Miami Open, but judging by his painful exit from the court, serious doubts remain about when—or if—he will be able to return to competition.
