Australia’s
Nick Kyrgios is set to return to Mallorca
Championships for the 2025 season. The 29-year-old, who was once regarded as
one of the best Australian players, has recently returned to the court after
spending more than two years on the sidelines because of a wrist injury.
Kyrgios is now set to feature in the
Mallorca Championships in
2025. The tournament director confirmed the development in a statement. "Nick
Kyrgios Returns to the Mallorca Championships for 2025," he said. "Following his doubles
appearance with Novak Djokovic in Brisbane, the Australian star is ready to
shine again in Mallorca."
The development is an interesting one as it was the same
tournament where Kyrgios suffered a serious wrist injury which kept him out of
action for more than two years. During that time, he missed as many as eight
Grand Slams. The former world number 13 recently participated in the Brisbane International,
both in the singles and doubles categories.
In the singles category, he lost in the first round to
France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard with a score of 7-6, 6-7, 7-6. In the doubles
category, he and his partner — former world number one in the singles category
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic — lost to the pair of Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus
in the round of 16 with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 10-8.
Kyrgios, who is famous for being vocal and has been involved
in a lot of controversies as well, has been recently in the news for
criticising Italy’s Jannik Sinner after the reigning world number one managed to
escape a ban despite testing positive in two doping tests. The 29-year-old,
recently in a press conference, stated that he will continue to raise voice about
the issue.
“I have to be outspoken about it because I don’t think
there’s enough people that are speaking about it,” he said. “I think people are
trying to sweep it under the rug. I just think that it’s been handled
horrifically in our sport. Two world No 1’s both getting done for doping is
disgusting for our sport. It’s a horrible look. The tennis integrity right now
– and everyone knows it, but no one wants to speak about it – it’s awful. It’s
actually awful. And it’s not OK. I know that people don’t like when I just
speak out about things, be honest about things. For a kid that grew up playing
tennis, I enjoyed the competition, I enjoyed playing. I can get emotional, I
can throw a racquet, but that’s nothing compared to cheating and taking
performance-enhancing drug performance-enhancing drugs. That’s ridiculous in my
opinion.”
