Serbia was dealt a blow days ago with the absence of Novak Djokovic from their Davis Cup squad. However, led by Hamad Medjedovic and Miomir Kecmanovic, the Serbian team surged to a 2-0 lead on the opening day against Holger Rune’s Denmark.

It was a strong start for Serbia, securing two key wins. In the first match, Miomir Kecmanovic (No. 55) staged a comeback to defeat Elmer Møller (No. 149) 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, giving his country a crucial opening point. Then, 2023 Next Gen ATP Finals champion Medjedovic (No. 94) stepped onto the court against world No. 12 Holger Rune.

The 21-year-old's victory could be pivotal for Serbia’s chances, as they now have three opportunities to close out the tie, starting with the doubles match. As it stands, August Holmgren and Johannes Ingildsen are set to represent Denmark, while Serbia will field twin brothers Ivan and Matej Sabanov, who were called in at the last moment following Djokovic’s withdrawal due to injury.

A year ago, Serbia was eliminated in the qualifying round, also without their 24-time Grand Slam champion. Back then, despite being heavy favourites at home, they fell short with Miomir Kecmanovic (No. 55) and Dusan Lajovic (No. 79) against Slovakia’s Alex Molčan (No. 526) and Lukas Klein (No. 153).

Djokovic is currently recovering from a thigh tear, which forced him to retire during his Australian Open semifinal against Alexander Zverev after just one set. The former world No. 1 has yet to announce his return date, but reports suggest he will prioritise a full recovery and may not return until the clay swing in early April.
