Marin Cilic threw away a victory against
Jannik Sinner at the Davis Cup but the Croatian was also impressed by the comeback the young Italian was able to mount.
Coming back from a set and break down is never easy and Jannik Sinner was able to do so against Marin Cilic in an elimination match in the Davis Cup Finals. The Croatian was cruising against the Italian but sam himself get beaten after Sinner taped into a higher gear as the match continued. Cilic found himself very impressed by Sinner and he is hardly the only one.
Speaking after the match he said:
"Jannik, at his age, is already in the top 10. He's playing very well, he's having a great season. He's
just going to keep getting better and better. How far can he go? No one
knows. But he already has an incredible level. These days you have to
play really well in Grand Slams and be consistent to be a world No. 3.
When I was in this position I had played for 12 months in an
extraordinary way."
Cilic had a solid season overall starting to play much better towards the end. It's something that gives him the confidence he will be able to return to the top 10 in 2022 which is his goal. Asked about it he said:
"That’s obviously my goal. Who knows where it will take me, but for me, it’s a great start, these two tournaments in Russia. It obviously helps so much for my confidence end of the season playing this well."
