"No, you're just selfish and greedy" - Tennis fans lash out at Taylor Fritz over his decision to play mixed doubles at 2025 US Open

American tennis star Taylor Fritz has received some criticism from tennis fans following his decision to participate at the mixed doubles event of the 2025 US Open, with the Grand Slam tournament making some new changes to the format.
The US Open organizers revealed the amendments to the mixed doubles event earlier this year. Not only will the draw be halved from 32 to 16 teams, but eight of those teams will be able to enter via their singles ranking. Additionally, there will also be an increase in prize money.
Fritz likely to compete following tournament restructure
In an interview at the ongoing Delray Beach Open, Fritz admitted he would consider playing at the mixed doubles event this year, and praised the tournament organizers for their decision to switch things up.
"Yeah, I think there’s a very good chance that I’ll play the mixed doubles competition honestly, it falls at a good time,” said Fritz. “I think that it’s going to be really exciting, a lot of people are going to be excited about it and I genuinely love playing mixed doubles.
“So, I think there’s a good chance I’ll play and I think for people like me, I’m excited about it, I think it’ll be a good change, but obviously I’m biased toward it because it’s in a better spot for me to play. I’m never going to play it during, you know, in between singles matches and during the tournament, so I would never play it otherwise."
However, tennis fans reacted negatively to his decision, with many believing the American was being selfish as he was taking a spot away from doubles players.
"Tennis is such an individual sport so they are all inherently selfish," said one fan.
“No you’re just selfish and greedy,” wrote another fan.
"I truly hope that all the singles pairs gets knocked out first round, preferably embarrassingly easy," wrote an upset fan.

The main take-away here is that Simona went out on her own terms. She surely wanted to play again after WTA & ITIA screwed her out of her final productive seasons. - It sounds seriously absurd that in Davis Cup, (unlike Grand Slams such as the Aus Open), medical time outs off court with the medical staff are not allowed?? I mean, if this was an Aus Open match, and the same thing happened to Gurin then, he would have been able to go off court for official medical time out and make an informed decision whether to resume the match or retire. How come such conditions do not apply in Davis Cup?? I mean, there with Davis Cup, it is even more like a soccer match or basketball game in that teams are playing. And so as with those, it ought to be the case in tennis that if a player needs serious medical time out, then one of the other team mates ought to substitute and each team needs to have stand-ins or understudies in case substitution is needed which will be rare but as we can see here, this kind of circumstance fits. But even if the teams do not go down the road of subbing other team mates in, in case of a health issue like the one which played out here, at least, as in the Aus Open and other Grand Slams, there ought to be time-outs with the health professionals and at the conclusion of these time-outs, the particular decision that has been reached between them and the player needs to be taken on board by the umpire.
