Cameron Norrie bounced back well after a terrible finish in Auckland where he wasted a 3-0 lead in the final set against a tired Richard Gasquet who won his first title in four years.
Norrie was shocked after he lost the Auckland final but needed to bounce back quickly due to the tricky round-one matchup he had in Melbourne. Norrie struggled a bit in the first set and speaking after the match he confirmed that he was quite nervous in that set which was the case for the Auckland conclusion as well.
He said:
“I was pretty nervous but I managed to relax in the second set there and close out a tough game. Not my best level but I’ll build on it. I enjoyed the match after that tricky first set.”
Norrie once again spoke about his long-term goal in tennis and his dream of becoming world number one. He understands that it's a long-shot but remains something he is going to continue pursuing:
"I want to be world No 1, that’s a big goal for me. Obviously there’s a lot of things I need to tick off first, I have not been top five yet so it’s a goal I want to put in my mind to make sure every day I am practising towards that and trying to be the best player in the world. It’s a tough goal and a long way to go.”
