Novak Djokovic lifting his arm in passion
There was controversy between Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic right at the start of the their quarter-final showdown at the China Open. There was a discussion between the players and umpire with the six-time champion less than impressed.
After a lengthy rally was completed between them, Djokovic would win the point. Zverev had returned and competed the point with little fuss but he would not be satisfied at the end.
What followed a shanked forehand was Zverev putting his hand in the air and claiming to the umpire that the side LED screen had changed images during the serve, leaving him distracted as he searched for a chance to get the point replayed.
The umpire sided with the two-time Grand Slam champion, leaving a seething Djokovic to confront him.
"He served, I played a shot, he played another, and only then does he challenge. Is that okay? If the screen bothered him, he should've stopped right after the serve, not kept going. You missed the forehand and only then complained."
Zverev came to the net and shared his side of the story. "I didn't know if I could challenge for that, that's why I came over and asked the umpire."
Djokovic was not overly happy by this whole ordeal, continuing to state his displeasure. "This has to be one of the stupidest rule changes I've ever heard of. It makes no sense. If a player is bothered by something, they stop immediately. Otherwise, we could rally for 30 shots, lose the point, and say: 'Okay, now I'll challenge.'"
The match continued normally from there. Zverev had a break lead from the opening game that he utilised to win the first set. Djokovic came fighting back, leaving it late to force a third-set decider. His shenanigans with the umpire were not done there, receiving a code violation for taking too long to serve.
He would complete the comeback to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a fabulous display. He will face Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final after making it 32 consecutive wins at the China Open.
