Following an injury suffered in the round of 16 at
Roland Garros, World No.1
Novak Djokovic is set to face some time on the sidelines. With the Serbian's grass court season in doubt, Djokovic could experience a rapid plummet in his standing on the ATP Ranking table.
Djokovic battled past a determined Francisco Cerundolo in his round of 16 match at Roland Garros. The 24-time Grand Slam champion was forced to dig deep to overcome his Argentine opponent, who held a two sets to one lead before Djokovic roared back to escape with the victory.
However, the Serbian's comeback came at a cost, as Djokovic suffered a right knee injury during the marathon match. Subsequently, he announced his withdrawal from his quarterfinal matchup with Casper Ruud, and later revealed he had torn his medial meniscus. Furthermore, the 37-year old stated he would be taking some time to recuperate, which put his
Wimbledon participation in doubt.
With Italian Jannik Sinner taking over the World No.1 spot due to Djokovic's withdrawal, the Serbian could see himself drop even further in the rankings should he miss Wimbledon. He stands to lose 1,200 points earned from a runner-up appearance at last year's edition. Additionally, he could fall out of the top 5 with the likes of Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz at his heels. Tennis star Alexander Zverev will also be in the race, as the German continues to advance at Roland Garros.
