Novak Djokovic secured a commanding victory over local favorite
Dan Evans at
Wimbledon. The Serb had no problems closing out a 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 win, guaranteeing his passage to the third round. This marks his 99th main draw victory at the All England Club.
Just as in his first-round match against Alexandre Muller, Djokovic was impeccable on his serve, giving his opponent virtually no chances. The 24-time Grand Slam champion advances and awaits his next opponent: his compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic.
First Set
From the start of the match, Djokovic looked more comfortable on his serve and closer to putting pressure on his opponent's serve. Evans had to save four break points in the fourth game—and three more in the sixth game—but managed to hold serve until 3-3. However, "Nole" would get three more break chances, and this time, he seized the break that put him ahead 5-3.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion comfortably closed out the set on his serve, where he conceded only three service points and tallied 7 aces and 17 winners.
Second Set
Again in the second set, Djokovic played at a high level on return. After Evans took the first game on his serve, Djokovic went on a scoring run that gave him control for a large part of the set. The Serb won 5 consecutive games—including two breaks—in which he claimed 20 out of the 23 points played.
With the score at 5-1 in Djokovic's favor, Evans managed to win another service game, but he couldn't do anything to create even a break opportunity. Djokovic once again closed out the set on his serve—a set in which he conceded only two points on his serve (89% effectiveness), along with 12 winners and just one unforced error.
Third Set
With everything already in Djokovic's favor, things only became more advantageous for the Serb. An early break in the third set gave him the motivation to start the set easily, up 2-0 on his serve. The 24-time Grand Slam champion capitalized on the momentum to take a second consecutive break on his first opportunity.
Evans couldn't escape the loop he was in, committing more errors than ever against an opponent who wouldn't let up. Djokovic didn't hesitate in the final stretch, securing three consecutive breaks to go up 5-0. As he was about to close out the victory, Evans had a couple of break opportunities, but he couldn't convert them.
Djokovic closed out an impressive 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 victory and will face his compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round. Djokovic holds a favorable 3-0 head-to-head record against Kecmanović, including a third-round encounter at Wimbledon in 2022, the year Nole went on to win the title.
