Novak Djokovic has addressed the online theory that emerged after he arrived in Brisbane sporting a striking Pikachu backpack. The Serbian star, who is aiming for his 25th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, where he has already won 10 trophies, sparked comparisons to the iconic Pokémon.
Pikachu is No. 25 in the National Pokédex, and social media buzzed with speculation that Djokovic’s choice of backpack was a nod to his pursuit of a 25th major title. Responding to the theory, Djokovic said, “All I can say is my kids, particularly my son, loves Pikachu. Subtle, subliminal messages,” he added with a smile.
“It’s his bag. But I was carrying it on my back coming out of the airport. I have seen [what is being said]. It makes me laugh – I love it.”
This year, Djokovic made a significant change by travelling to Australia with his entire family, a departure from previous seasons. “I wasn’t expecting that because I know it’s a long trip, [and with] school and everything. There are many challenges that you have to face as a parent,” Djokovic explained.
“I’m doing my own thing here. If I have a match day, I’m spending time getting ready for that match and everything. Obviously, she has to take care of the kid,” the world No. 7 continued. “She’s here supporting me, trying to give me that love and energy, along with the kids, that I need to play my best tennis. So far, it’s working very well. I’m feeling great on the court, I’m playing great.”
Currently, Djokovic is competing at the Brisbane International, where he has reached the quarterfinals after victories over Rinky Hijikata (6-3, 6-3) and Gaël Monfils (6-3, 6-3). His next challenge is against Reilly Opelka (No. 293), who recently returned to the tour after a lengthy injury layoff. Opelka has already secured back-to-back wins over Federico Gómez and Matteo Arnaldi this year and will aim to cause an upset against Djokovic for a spot in the semifinals.
