Novak Djokovic defeated Matteo Berrettini 6-3 6-2 6-4 6-7(5) 7-5 in the Roland Garros quarterfinal setting up a semifinal clash with Rafael Nadal.
Novak Djokovic did not disappoint tennis fans around the world doing his part in giving the fans the widely-anticipated Roland Garros semifinal vs Rafael Nadal. Many wondered what Matteo Berrettini could do in the quarterfinals against Djokovic but him missing a match vs Federer did not serve him well.
The Italian was misfiring to start the match racking up more errors than winners and against a very good Djokovic, it proved his downfall. He won most points where he hit his first serve but he only hit it 66 % of the times which left enough room for Djokovic. The Serbian won 7 of 10 % points of the Italian's 2nd serve and that was enough for the 6-3 first set win.
Djokovic pulled back his intensity in the 2nd set noticing that Berrettini was playing very erratic. The Italian once again continued his signature aggressive style but he was misfiring even more than in the 1st. When he got his first serve in he was solid but once he served his 2nd it was over for him and Djokovic broke him twice for the 6-2 finish.
The 3rd set was best from Berrettini as his play in rallies improved significantly. He was hitting timely winners and for the first time in the match had more winners than errors and that proved key. He held his own forcing a tiebreak and in it outplayed Djokovic taking it 7-5.
The 3rd set featured a lot of things including a suspension of play at 3-2 to Djokovic due to the curfew. Upon return play resumed and a visibly annoyed Djokovic was able to close it out with 7-5.
