It wasn’t meant to be tonight. Well played, @AlexeiPopyrin99. Time for me to relax, regroup and move on. Until next time, NYC. 🙏🏼
Former World No.1 Novak Djokovic will not have much time to lament his disappointing performance at the 2024 US Open, as the Serbian is slated to represent his nation in Davis Cup competition next week.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion was hoping to win his first Major title of the season, after a successful bid at claiming Olympic gold in Paris a few weeks earlier. After breezing through his first two rounds, Djokovic was upset by the 28th-seeded Australian Alexei Popyrin, ending his bid to taste Grand Slam glory in 2024.
Nonetheless, the 37-year old will be called to action next week when his native Serbia takes on Greece in a Davis Cup World Group I showdown. Scheduled to take place in Belgrade, Serbia from September 14-15, the former World No.1 will receive a hero's welcome when he steps onto the court for the first time after his loss at Flushing Meadows.
Having accomplished every milestone in the sport of tennis, Djokovic is also a former Davis Cup winner. The Belgrade native led Serbia to victory in 2010, where they defeated France 3-2 in the final to claim the country's first Davis Cup title.
