Former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero sees his protege Alcaraz currently at only 65 % of his potential which is a bad sign for the rest of the tennis world.
Alcaraz has been quite dominant at times when he played really good tennis and he only lost two matches so far this year. His level is certainly top 5 consistently with his peak being almost as good as that of Djokovic. We haven't seen them play in a year but the rest of the tour struggles immensely against the Spaniard which is a solid indicator. After all, he only needs to be better than everybody else to win.
Speaking about Alcaraz recently, Ferrero said:
“He’s [Alcaraz] playing at the top level but obviously he’s not 100%.
A tennis player has to improve things all his life and Carlos has to be
able to do that for his career. He has to improve his return, he has to improve
his consistency on service, he has to improve small details. In Miami,
he led 6-0, 5-4 and made three mistakes in a row on his serve against
[Dusan] Lajovic and went to the tiebreak."
He then gave his analysis on potential claiming that he's at about 65 - 70 % which is scary to think about because even this level can be crazy good at times:
“Even mentally: people feel he is super strong, he obviously is, but
he needs to be more mature in a lot of areas on the court and off the
court. Maybe he’s at 65% or 70% [of his full potential]. But he’ll turn 20 next month, he has to improve many, many things.”
We'll have to wait on his return because he won't be playing in Monte Carlo due to another injury.
