Ben Shelton played his first-ever clay match at the Estoril Open yesterday and the American won it earning himself a 100 % win percentage on the surface.
Due to that, he was jokingly proclaimed as the 'King of Clay' on social media as he currently has a better clay record that noted specialists on the surface such as Lendl, Borg and Nadal. Ivan Lendl has an 81 % win percentage on the surface, Bjorn Borg has an 86 % percentage on the surface. Nadal obviously has the iconic 91 % with Shelton now on top with 100 %.
After the match itself, Shelton talked about his lack of experience on clay:
“I haven’t thought about [not having played on clay] much. I’m really focused on my development right now, trying to get better in each match, each day, and try to improve my game. I’m not thinking about the numbers or the rankings or what I’ve done on what surface so far. I think my serve is really effective on this surface with the way it bounces. And with my willingness to come to the net, I think it will be a good combo for me to get a lot of easier points.”
