Amanda Anisimova delivered a moving speech at the Wimbledon awards ceremony, after suffering a devastating 0-6, 0-6 loss in the final to
Iga Swiatek. The American was visibly emotional and in tears when she received the runner-up trophy, thanking her mother who traveled last-minute to witness the final.
The World No. 12 reached her first Grand Slam final after achieving the best win of her career against Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals. Anisimova, however, couldn't pull off another surprise, ultimately falling to the multi-Grand Slam champion Pole by a resounding "double bagel."
Perhaps the lack of experience in these high-stakes moments was the key factor that led to an Anisimova far from her level of the past two weeks, and who never managed to find her rhythm in the match. The 24-year-old player delivered an emotional acceptance speech, where she especially thanked her mother for being present.
"My mom has put in more work than I have honestly,” Anisimova said through tears. “Guys I’m so sorry. A few more words... My mom is the most selfless person I know. She’s done everything to get me to this point in my life. Thank you for being here and breaking the superstition of flying in. It’s definitely not why I lost today,” Anisimova smiled.
“I’m so happy I get to share this moment and for you to witness this in person. I know you don’t get to see me live playing that much anymore because you do so much for my sister and I. You always have. I love you so much.”
