This Sunday will feature the 2025
Wimbledon Men's Singles final, a rematch of the Roland Garros final between
Jannik Sinner and
Carlos Alcaraz. The two best players in the world meet again in a Grand Slam final just a month after their clash in Paris, where the Spaniard saved match points before claiming his 5th Grand Slam title.
Alcaraz enters as the favorite with a 20-match winning streak at the All England Club and defending the crown he won in 2023 and 2024. He also holds a five-match winning streak in his rivalry against Sinner, including two finals in the last two months.
Jannik Sinner breaks Wimbledon semifinal barrier
The World No. 1 had a perfect first week in terms of results, with wins against Luca Nardi, Alexander Vukic, and Pedro Martinez, averaging less than 6 games lost per round. However, doubts emerged with a shaky performance against Grigor Dimitrov in the 4th round, where the Bulgarian was two sets to love up and had to retire in the third set due to injury. It was a match where it seemed the Italian could have been upset early, but with some luck, he managed to advance to the quarterfinals.
However, his level has not dropped in the following rounds, with convincing wins against Ben Shelton and Novak Djokovic, both in straight sets. The Italian has suffered four service breaks in the tournament – three of them against Dimitrov.
Sinner broke through the semifinals barrier at Wimbledon and became only the 5th player in the Open Era to reach finals at all four Grand Slams – trailing only the Big-4 (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray). He will seek his 4th Grand Slam title – and first outside of hardcourts – against the opponent who has given him the most trouble in his career: Carlos Alcaraz.
The Italian's statistics in finals are more than remarkable, with 19 titles and 7 runner-up finishes. Since the beginning of 2023 to date, Sinner has played 12 finals, winning 9 titles and suffering three defeats: all of them against Alcaraz. The last two finals were losses to Alcaraz in Rome and Roland Garros. The last one was particularly painful, where the Italian had three match points in his favor. There will surely be extra motivation to turn things around against the opponent who, by far, has posed the most problems for Jannik.
Carlos Alcaraz's perfect Grand Slam final record on the line
"Carlitos" had a tough first-round debut against Fabio Fognini, where the Italian – on the verge of retirement – pushed him to a 5th set in a commendable performance from the former No. 9. From there, Alcaraz has not struggled much to defeat Oliver Tarvert, Jan-Lennard Struff, Andrey Rublev (14th), and Cameron Norrie. He found a complicated opponent in the semifinals in Taylor Fritz, where a lapse in concentration cost him the second set, but he ultimately pulled off an impressive four-set victory – saving a couple of set points against him in the fourth.
Alcaraz is on an simply incredible streak. He has three consecutive titles and a 24-match winning streak (a 33-1 record since the start of the clay-court swing, with only one loss in the Barcelona Open final against Holger Rune). Alcaraz also boasts 18 consecutive wins on grass courts and 20 on the courts of the All England Club.
Alcaraz has shown very high effectiveness in finals, with 21 titles and 6 runner-up finishes. In Grand Slam finals, he has a perfect 5/5 record. He will also seek to become the 5th male player to win three consecutive Wimbledon titles, after Bjorn Borg (1976-1980), Pete Sampras (1993-1995, 1997-2000), Roger Federer (2003-2007), and Novak Djokovic (2018-2022).
Rivalry rekindled: Can Sinner finally break the Alcaraz spell?
This will be the 13th episode of the Sinner and Alcaraz rivalry, which currently sees the Spaniard leading definitively 8-4, having won their last 5 encounters. In terms of finals, Alcaraz leads 3-1 (the last three encounters, in fact, were in finals with victories for the Spaniard). However, it is only their second grass-court encounter: the previous one was at Wimbledon 2022, with a victory for Sinner.
The most epic battle was probably the one they had a month ago at Roland Garros – one of the most epic Grand Slam finals in history – where Alcaraz recovered from two sets down and saved three match points before claiming victory in 5 hours and 29 minutes in the 5th set tie-break, achieving his 5th major title.
Alcaraz has become Sinner's "bogeyman," practically appearing as the only player with the tools to overcome the World No. 1. Sinner has been close in most of their recent encounters but has not been able to overcome Alcaraz. This will be the Italian's opportunity to achieve his 4th major title and take revenge for a negative streak against Alcaraz.
