Two renowned names from the world of women’s tennis will
play in an exhibition match in Riyadh, Saudia Arabia on December 26.
The oil-rich country in the Middle East has been heavily
investing in different sports in the recent past as a part of the state’s
policy to build its soft image. It is because of this reason they have
managed to buy an English Premier League club like New Castle United and signed
some of the big-name players from Europe for their home league.
Saudi Arabia has also invested in golf which led to the
merger of Liv Golf and the PGA tour. They have never shied away from showing
interest in investing in tennis as well.
As a part of such a campaign, the current world number two
Belarus’
Aryna Sabalenka and three-time Grand Slam finalist Tunisia’s Ons
Jabeur will play in an exhibition match in the city of Riyadh on Boxing Day
later this year.
Both Sabalenka and Jabeur will take part in the first tennis
match after ending the season with the WTA Finals. The world number two ended
up playing in the semifinal where she lost to the current world number one
Poland’s Iga Swiatek with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
On the other hand, Jabeur could not manage to qualify for
the knockout stage of the competition after losing two out of three group
matches.
