Playing Tomljanovic on hard courts can be a tricky proposition yet top 10 player Paula Badosa rose up to the challenge. The Spaniard did not play this well last week when she got bested by Azarenka but victories such as this are confidence building. That is what Badosa needs ahead of the Australian where she will have a thing or two to say.
The first set had several breaks with neither player playing too well on their serve. They traded early breaks early in the match after which Badosa started playing better. Tomljanovic did not give up breaking her opponent several times as well but she could not win her own service game and that's was a major problem.
The start of the 2nd set continued with a similar trend as Badosa once again lost her serve in the first game. She also pulled the break back immediately even taking a 3-1 lead. Some careless play almost cost her the set as Tomljanovic was able to turn it around even taking a 4-3 lead. When serving for the 5-3 however she was unable to get it done.
Badosa made it 4-4 after which she finished off the match with two more games. Better than last week but still far from good by the Spaniard. More matches and more wins should do the trick.
