Novak Djokovic did everything he could but ultimately he could not lift Serbia past Germany losing the tie 1-2.
Djokovic won his singles match comfortably and played fairly well in the doubles match but it was not enough as Krawietz and Puetz were able to win thanks to experience. Paired up with Cacic, Djokovic held a 3-1 lead in the 3rd set but the inexperience of Cacic played a factor late in the match as the Germans targeted him quite a bit.
Serbia is now in a tricky situation not guaranteed a place in the quarterfinal and speaking about that Djokovic said:
"Playing for the national team is special. Everyone is aware of the privilege. We play an individual sport and it's extremely special when we are part of a team and play as one. All the generations I've been part of gave it their all. We have a good atmosphere and we'll see."
Djokovic singles match was the 50th time he played for Serbia in the
Davis Cup and asked about that he said:
"It's an honor, a big number that I was not aware of. People reminded me that it's been over 15 years since I debuted. I remember all the matches and ties, all the wins and losses. Every time I lost my world collapsed."
Djokovic also spoke about the fact that playing for Serbia for him is a priority always:
"As I get older the passion to play for Serbia gets bigger. I hope I am healthy so that I can always play for my country. For me at this time, playing for Serbia is an absolute priority."
