In a recent interview with Canadian television channel TSN, Vasek Pospisil spoke about his opinion on the 2020 US Open.
The 30-years-old Canadian reached his career-high 25th place in the ATP Ranking back in 2014. In the same year, he also triumphed at the Wimbledon in doubles with Jack Sock. The Coronavirus lockdown caused Tour suspension and
cancellation of the Wimbledon. The US Open and Roland Garros are the last 2 Grand Slams that are set to take place during the 2020 season. However, there are still many concerns around the competition as the recent
Adria Tour had to be cancelled due to players testing positive for COVID-19. In a recent interview, Pospisil said:
“I have mixed feelings on the next edition of the US Open. My concern is that they don’t have a qualifying event for lower-ranked players. It needs to be fair across the board because I am not sure if all the players can actually make it to New York," said Pospisil. "The last thing you want is to have players who can actually improve their rankings, or have the possibility of moving up in the ranking, and others stuck in South America where the situation is really bad, who can’t even travel and make it to New York.”
“The US Open is intending to have a bubble where players can’t leave the grounds and can’t leave the hotel. I understand that they are trying to protect the players, but there is the issue of what happens if someone gets infected who is in the bubble and the nit spreads. There are a lot of issues, a lot of question marks and issues. The general consensus was that most players were not in favor and did not want to play," Pospisil admitted. "So clearly a lot of players don’t feel safe. And the issue is that we pretty much have to do what the tournaments say, they have all the power. So suddenly, they are throwing an event. There are regular ranking points. Suddenly all the players feel like they have to go, otherwise, they will be at a disadvantage."
