This Sunday, June 8, the 2025
French Open will conclude with a dream men's final between
Jannik Sinner and
Carlos Alcaraz. It will be the first time since 2020 that the World No. 1 and No. 2 face each other in the
Roland Garros final (the previous one being Djokovic vs. Nadal).
'Carlitos' is in impeccable form on clay and is the defending champion, in addition to holding a positive head-to-head record against Sinner. However, the Italian is on a great momentum, having not dropped a set in the tournament and after overcoming 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
Defending champion Alcaraz ready to reign
The world No. 2 is probably a slight favorite as the defending champion at the French Open, and the player who, throughout his career, has felt most comfortable on clay courts. The Spaniard has a 21-1 record on the clay-court swing this year, winning titles at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Rome Open – in addition to reaching the final of the Barcelona Open.
With 13 consecutive wins at Roland Garros, Alcaraz this time overcame tough opponents like Ben Shelton (13th), Tommy Paul (12th), and Lorenzo Musetti (8th). The Italian had to retire mid-match in the semifinals due to physical problems in his left leg, giving Alcaraz passage to the final with a score of 4-6, 7-6, 6-0, 2-0, ret.
The 22-year-old Spaniard also has a great track record against Sinner, with four consecutive wins facing the Italian since the beginning of 2024, and a recent match in the Rome final, where 'Carlitos' defeated his biggest rival in straight sets.
Jannik Sinner's perfect run: No sets dropped in route to the final
The world No. 1 took virtually no time to return to the extremely high level he showed before his suspension, and has had a more than intimidating level on clay courts, a surface that in previous years was not too comfortable for him. Sinner has 11 wins in 12 matches played on the surface this year, only being defeated by Alcaraz. In Paris, he hasn't even conceded a set yet, and even went several four consecutive matches without facing a single break point.
In the semifinals, he faced no less than the 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, with whom he had a tough battle, but the Italian's level was simply unreachable for Nole. Sinner took the victory 6-4, 7-5, 7-6(3) and advanced to his fourth Grand Slam final.
Sinner won his only clay-court title at Umag 2022 - he defeated Alcaraz in three sets.
Rivalry
Sinner has looked practically invincible in recent seasons... except when it comes to facing Alcaraz. The Spaniard dominates the head-to-head 7-4, with the particularity that he has won the last four direct encounters consecutively. So far, they have only faced each other in two finals: Umag 2022 (Sinner's victory) and Beijing 2024 (Alcaraz's victory).
It will be the first time Sinner and Alcaraz face each other in a Grand Slam final, something undoubtedly long-awaited for the two best players on the Tour in recent seasons. Sinner has a perfect record of 3/3 in Grand Slam finals, absolute effectiveness just like Alcaraz with 4/4. Curiously, both players have exactly the same record in career finals: both with 19 titles in 25 finals (76%).
