Andy Murray is very motivated in this late stage of his career and it comes from the fact that many have counted him out from serious tennis.
That is according to
Monica Puig who certainly understands where Murray comes from. She too dealt with a lot of injuries just like Murray and she too was easily brushed off even after her Olympic Games triumph. Unfortunately, her injuries proved severe and she was forced to retire as Murray keeps battling.
Speaking about Murray, Puig said:
"We do not know how many more years he's going to play but he's making every moment that he steps onto the court count."
She was impressed by his performances in Australia and she believes it comes from his desire to prove everyone wrong once he steps out on the court:
"I feel that Andy has something to prove every time he
goes on the court because the amount of times people have counted him
out, said he was never going to play again, said that physically he's
not going to endure the rigours of professional tennis again. Having
something to prove works for some people and others it doesn't, but it
definitely works for him."
Murray somewhat confirmed that when he wrote on Twitter that he met the doctor who told him a few years ago that his tennis career is done. Puig referenced that as well:
"I believe he crossed paths with one of the doctors who
said that he was never going to be able to play at this level again and
he was like 'aha!' so it's like he wants to prove he still has it, that
he's still got it and he's proving that day in day out and that goes to
show that hard work does pay off."
