Victoria Azarenka expressed solidarity with the people of Turkey and Syria after the countries were hit by a devastating earthquake about a week ago.
A devastating earthquake hit Turkey and Syria with the epicentre on the Turkish side of the border. It's a catastrophe with the Belarussian working behind the scenes of setting up a relief effort in order to help those affected by it. She confirmed after the match that the WTA is setting up a relief fund in hopes of helping the situation.
Due to the fact that she faced a Turkish player, Azarenka walked out with a Turkish flag. She also warmly embraced with her opponent after the match and speaking following the win, Azarenka said:
"It was our first meeting and I'm sure it was very hard for her to go out on court and play right now, so I wish her strength so hopefully somehow, someway, things can get better."
