America’s young tennis star Ben Shelton has admitted that the speed gun at Wimbledon malfunctioned while recording the speed of the serve. The third Grand Slam of the year is moving towards conclusion with the final in the men’s singles category on Sunday between Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
America’s Shelton was one of the players who gathered a lot of attraction despite not making big in the mega-event. The 21-year-old is already regarded as one of the best American players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category. The Atlanta-born star was once again in the news after news that he registered the fastest-ever serve, clocking at 153 mph.
That, however, was not endorsed by Shelton as well, who was quoted in a report where he admitted that the speed gun was not functioning correctly. "Btw this is fake news. It was a slow kick 2nd serve. Prolly 85 mph. Radar gun malfunction,” he said.
Shelton’s journey came to an end as he lost to the current world number one Jannik Sinner in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4, 7-6. Overall, Shelton is not having a great season. His most impressive outing came in an ATP event in Houston, where he lifted the title after beating Frances Tiafoe with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Other than that, he also played in the semifinal of the Dallas Open, where he lost to fellow American Tommy Paul in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
Shelton’s record in major events this year hasn’t been excellent either. Despite participating in all three mega-events, the young American tennis star has not managed to play in the quarterfinal or beyond. His best appearance in a Grand Slam in 2024 came at Wimbledon, where he was knocked out after losing in the fourth round. Previously, he was knocked out of the Australian Open and the French Open after losing in the third round.
