Rafael Nadal went through the tournament in Flushing Meadows with no major problems and won it after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final.
Everything looked too simple for Nadal from the beginning. He managed to win 7-5 in the first set and also won the second set by 6-3.
In the third set, the Spaniard took the opponent's serve and led already 3-2 and it looked like the final match would end after 3 sets. But Daniil Medvedev started to play the highest level of tennis.
He turned the course of the third set, winning it 7-5 and winning the fourth 6-4. A beautiful tennis performance by both players was decided by the fifth set.
Medvedev started it better by leading 1-0 and having up to 3 break balls on the opponent's serve but didn't use either. On the other hand, Nadal took the second chance to break his opponent's service in the fifth game, and he also managed to do it 2 games later.
Rafa led 5-2 and was serving for the win, but even now Medvedev did not give up. He took Nadal's serve and turned off 2 match balls on his.
On Rafa's serve, Medvedev even got to the break ball to level the score to 5-5, but he did not take advantage of it and the Spaniard used his third match ball to win the 19 Grand Slam title. In the historical charts, he still lacks one to level the record held by Roger Federer.

This 'article' may be informative for newbies or fair-weather tennis observers but the majority of fans know the root of the multiple issues within WTA. The #1 issue being the subject of health & well-being which has been (or has attempted to be) addressed with the WTA Elitist council members last season. WTA was extremely dismissive of players' concerns and opposed to such a meeting. Eventually giving-in due to publicity and allowed selective players only -- no rep's, no medical personnel, and no team members. The meeting was a farce as WTA soon after that released an even more hectic schedule... with mandatory tourneys! Guess they weren't taking notes?? BTW: There is a lot missing from this piece concerning "withdrawals". No writer has yet taken the jump to get behind the scenes and dig at the problems -- obvious organizational problems. IMO, the top two issues are WTA's lack of proper attention to health & well-being of its Money-Makers; and Financial Greed. Tip to Mr. Lloyd: there is no "snubbing" when these players withdraw. These women have to take such measures as withdrawing from a tourney, and occasional time-off from the circuit, to protect themselves -- because WTA refuses to take any measures at all (although not allowing matches until sunrise is a start).
