Rafael Nadal advanced to his 29th grand slam final at the 2022 Australian Open with a great performance against Matteo Berrettini winning in four sets. The Spaniard will have a chance to become the first player ever to win 21 grand slam trophies and a chance to do so means a lot to him. Nadal was very engaged from the start and showed a lot of emotion both during the match and after the match.
The match was played under a close roof in quicker conditions which technically should have benefited Berrettini. Nadal opened the match with a fury taking a 3-0 lead and never looking back. He did not face a single break point in the first set and won it with 6-3. He upped his level in the 2nd set once again taking an early lead.
This time around it was a 4-0 lead which turned to a 6-2 2nd set finish. Nadal was just superb early playing very smart tennis that forced Berrettini to make mistakes. The Italian was solid but it was not good enough. The tables turned in the 3rd as Berrettini played his best set yet with Nadal making more mistakes than usual.
It was won by the Italian 6-3 to send the match into the 4th set. That one was pretty close with both playing well early. At 3-4, Matteo played a very poor service game, one of his worst all day and Nadal got the crucial break that allowed him to close it out with 6-3.
