Daniil Medvedev had to face the most formidable opponents in his first couple of Major finals, losing them both to Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic and still seeking one of four most famous trophies.
In 2019, Medvedev pushed Nadal to the limits at the US Open before the Spaniard prevailed in four hours and 51 minutes, barely bringing the victory home against the rival who refused to surrender. Daniil came at this year's Australian Open as one of the favorites, finishing the previous season with titles at the Paris Masters and the ATP Cup and opening the new one with the ATP Cup crown.
The Russian played well at Melbourne Park, beating six rivals and moving in front of Dominic Thiem to crack the top-3 for the first time. Seeking the first Major crown, Daniil faced the Melbourne king Novak Djokovic in the title clash, with the eight-time champion scoring a comprehensive 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 triumph in an hour and 53 minutes to add the ninth Australian Open crown to his tally!
Unlike Rafa, Novak gave Daniil no chance outside the opening set, winning it with a late break and storming over his opponent in sets two and three to defend the title and secure the 18th Major crown.
"Rafa gives you more time to think about your game. Novak takes all the advantages to his side," Daniil Medvedev said.
