Lorenzo Musetti and
Daniil Medvedev had a peculiar moment while playing in the rain at the
Rome Open, at a point when the ball wasn't even bouncing properly due to the amount of water falling on the court.
Normally on clay courts, when there is light rain, the umpires let play continue for a few more minutes, as the surface allows play when it is light. However, the intensification forced the match to be stopped just as Musetti earned his first match point of the match.
While Musetti led 7-5, 5-4 and was 30-30 on his serve, the cameras captured the intense sound of the rain, and the ball could be seen bouncing less due to the puddles that were beginning to form on the court. The Italian took advantage to play a dropshot that ended in a point in his favor, leaving him one point away from victory.
However, the chair umpire quickly decided to suspend the match due to the impossibility of finishing the game. The heavy rain forced people to begin leaving the stadium to take cover, while the players stopped play and left the court to wait for a return to the courts, no earlier than 6:00 PM local time.
