America’s tennis star
Reilly Opelka secured his maiden win
in 15 months after returning from a lengthy injury spell.
The 26-year-old missed the majority of the last year and this
year after suffering from fitness concerns for a long period of time.
However, Opelka has made a winning return as he defeated fellow
American Tennys Sandgren in the round of 32 of the Charlottesville Challenger
event with a score of 6-4, 7-5 on Wednesday.
Opelka is now set to face off young Aidan Mayo in the round
of 16 clash of the competition on Thursday.
The Michigan-born will be hoping that recent results will help
him regain his previous form despite staying on the sidelines for a long time.
Opelka, who is the tallest player to player in ATP events,
does not have a great record while playing at the highest level.
His best performance in any Grand Slam came in 2021 where he
was knocked out of US Open after suffering a defeat in the fourth round to
South Africa’s Lloyd Harris with a score of 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3.
Last year, Opelka participated in three out of the four
Grand Slams but failed to qualify in the fourth round or beyond in any of the
competitions.
