Dayana
Yastremska defeated
Eugenie Bouchard 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in the
US Open qualifying
and secured revenge following the Canadian's controversial tweet.
The world
No. 111 clinched her second victory in the Flushing Meadows qualifying and is
just one match away from entering the main draw for the sixth consecutive time.
Yastremska,
23 years old, faced off against 29-year-old Eugenie Bouchard, with whom she had
a controversy a few months ago.
During the
2023 Madrid Open, Bouchard emerged victorious over the Ukrainian with a score
of 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-2. After the match, Yastremska posted a tweet that read,
"There's something about facing certain opponents in Madrid."
The tweet
was interpreted as a reference to Yastremska's doping scandal in 2021 and her
previous match against Maria Sharapova at the same tournament in 2017.
Following the controversial tweet and fan reactions, Bouchard apologized and
deleted the tweet in question.
This was the
first meeting between the two players since then, and Yastremska displayed a
highly aggressive playing style that proved overwhelming for Bouchard.
Despite
coming into the tournament with positive tennis vibes, once again, the Canadian
found herself outside the main draw of a Grand Slam. Bouchard participated in
the qualifying rounds at this year's Australian Open and Wimbledon, being
eliminated in the first round in both instances, and now at the US Open as
well.
Her last
appearance in a Grand Slam main draw was at the 2020 French Open, where she
reached the third round before being defeated by eventual champion Iga Swiatek.
Bouchard's most recent participation in the US Open was in 2019, where she
exited in the first round. This marked the end of a streak of seven
consecutive years of participating in the main draw of the tournament.
In the
decisive match of the qualifying round, where a spot in the main draw will be
determined, the 12th seed Dayana Yastremska will face Romanian Elena-Gabriela
Ruse, who has already eliminated Kristina Mladenovic and the 17th seed Dalma
Galfi.
