Longtime tennis professional Richard Gasquet gave his verdict on the 'GOAT' debate by explaining that Grand Slams do not really count.
Much has been written and said about the 'GOAT' race between Federer, Djokovic and Nadal. The trio rarely spoke about it but other players, pundits and fans have taken part in numerous debates on the topic of the greatest tennis player of all time. It's a very controversial topic as most of the time it comes down to personal preference.
Gasquet shared his personal preference of Federer as the greatest by explaining his way of looking at the matter. He said:
"I see tennis differently, I have always said that for me the number of Grand Slam titles does not count. I often hear about this Grand Slam run for the GOAT but I think it's useless. Roger Federer is the GOAT, the greatest tennis player of all time, just look at the aesthetics and grace he has on the court."
It's not a controversial stance by Gasquet as Federer's grace on the court has been a longtime admiration of fans and tennis professionals alike. Not many tennis players look better while playing tennis than Federer and Gasquet compared it to another sport with a similar heated argument:
"I watch tennis for aesthetics and beauty, even Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal is among the best and certainly extraordinary tennis players. I don't like discussing pro Federer and pro Djokovic, I'm not like that and I like Nole too. When you look at Roger you are amazed, it's a bit like when you look at Messi and Neymar, they have great aesthetics and the sensations they give are extraordinary."
