Roger Federer gifts Rolex watches to John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg in their final Laver Cup as captains. Since the first edition in 2017, Borg and McEnroe have led Team Europe and Team World, rekindling their intense rivalry from their playing careers.
The two players had one of the most memorable rivalries in history, facing each other 14 times between 1978 and 1981, often described as “Fire and Ice,” due to McEnroe’s explosive personality versus Borg’s cool and emotionless demeanor on the court.
A few months ago, it was announced that this would be their final year as captains. From 2025, Andre Agassi will take over as captain of Team World, while Frenchman Yannick Noah will lead Team Europe.
As a farewell gesture for the tournament, Roger Federer, the main driving force behind the Laver Cup, gifted both captains a custom Rolex, each engraved with the message “Laver Cup, Team (Europe/World) Captain, 2017 – 2024.” The images were shared on social media.
A few days earlier, before the tournament began, Federer had already expressed his gratitude to both captains: “For me, it’s very much a bittersweet week with Bjorn and John because I would love them to be captains forever,” Federer said. “At the same time, we’ve got to move with the times, I guess,” the 20-time Grand Slam champion said.
