Roger
Federer celebrated on social media the confirmation of
Rafael Nadal's
participation in the upcoming
Laver Cup. The former Swiss tennis player
expressed his excitement about Nadal's return to competition, especially since
Federer played his last professional match in 2022 in the same tournament
alongside Nadal.
The
rivalry between Federer and Nadal transcended the court, and over the years,
they became great friends. Federer's retirement from the Laver Cup in 2022 left
emotional images for the tennis world, with Nadal and Federer shedding tears
together during the tribute ceremony for the Swiss player's career.
Possible
finale for Nadal's career?
This
time, Nadal is nearing his retirement, and the Laver Cup could be the ideal
place for him to close out his career, similar to his old rival Federer, who is
the co-founder of the tournament that pits the best European players against a
team from the Rest of the World.
Nadal will play his third tournament of the year at the Madrid Open, debuting against the 16-year-old Darwin Blanch.
Nadal
and Federer teamed up for Team Europe in 2017, 2019, and 2022. In the latter
year, they played a significant doubles match together but were defeated by the
American duo of Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe. Regardless of the result, both
legends cherished the opportunity to share the court one last time.
It is
highly likely that the 14-time French Open champion will decide to end his
career this year, considering ongoing physical issues and his limited
participation in tournaments this year. The Laver Cup will take place in Berlin
this year between September 20th and 22nd, just a couple of weeks after the US
Open, the final Grand Slam of the year.
