Roger Federer has been dumped out of the Western & Southern Open in stunning fashion by Russian qualifier Andrey Rublev in a straight sets (3-6, 4-6) defeat in Cincinnati.

Rublev had to come through qualifying for the event after injury troubles saw him slide down the rankings somewhat; but despite seeing off Nikoloz Basilashvili and Stan Wawrinka, not many would have seen an upset like this coming in a career best win over the seven time champion in the event.
He went 4-1 up and forced errors from Federer; before winning the first set 6-3 and despite the second set going with serve and seemingly gaining an entry back in for the Swiss ace; Rublev led 4-3 and consolidated the break to close out the tie.
Next up in his stunning run is Daniil Medvedev, a finalist in the Rogers Cup last week; who saw off Jan-Lennard Struff earlier 6-2, 6-1 to reach the Quarter-Finals. Could it be the week of the resurgent Russian?
