Andrey Rublev and Marin Cilic won their matches today to advance to the 3rd round of the US Open after some solid play.

Andrey Rublev started off the year in stellar fashion winning a couple of tournaments so his disappointment was huge when the season got suspended. His play since the restart is nowhere near what is was before but today it was enough. He played against Barrere who is a dangerous player when he plays his best but today wasn't his best. Rublev established himself early on taking an early lead with a 6-2 1st set victory.
His good play continued into the 2nd set despite Barrere playing better. Rublev controlled the match took chances when he had them and won the 2nd set 6-4. The 3rd set was where we saw the biggest battle. Barrere figured out his serving not allowing Rublev much. The Russian was solid all they long so naturally we ended up in a tiebreak. Determined not to let the match slip away Rublev played aggressively and it payed off as he won it 7-4 to end the match.
Marin Cilic had to go the full distance in the 1st round and while his match today was shorter it still wasn't clean. He faced Gombos who has been enjoying some modest success lately but Cilic was too good today. The Croatian started much better today winning the first set 6-3. He then completely collapsed in the next one losing it 6-1. The next set was a proper battle with both players delievering.
It was tightly contested affair that ended in a tiebreak won by Cilic 7-2. The 4th set was similar to the previous one as both players managed to win their own games thanks to some solid serving. The crucial moment of the set and match came at 5-5 when Cilic finally broke his opponent to take a 6-5 lead which became a 7-5 final set victory.
