The Russian ace claimed victory 6-4, 6-4 in just over an hour as he makes his debut at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after only having a qualifying appearance to his name before.
He won 84 per cent of first-serve points (26/31) to earn an impressive 14th victory in 16 matches this season. Joao Sousa or Filip Krajinovic await the now World No.14 next up.
Karen Khachanov is also through surviving a close first set to defeat Mikhail Kukushkin. He had to come from a break down twice in the second set but eased through from there 7-6, 6-1.
Philipp Kohlschreiber also came through a tough first set which he lost out in to record victory over Mohamad Safwat. He was downed 6-4 in the opening stanza but fought back to ease through 6-4, 6-0 from there.
