Holger Rune
left
Patrick Mouratoglou after his disappointing performance at the US Open and
is reuniting with his former coach, Lars Christensen.
World No. 4
was perhaps one of the biggest letdowns at Flushing Meadows this year. After a
strong run at Wimbledon, where he reached the quarterfinals but was defeated by
Carlos Alcaraz, the Danish player entered the US Open as the fourth seed, and
many considered him one of the favorites.
However,
Rune had a rough start in the first round against Spanish player Robert
Caraballes Baena and was ultimately defeated with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 3-6,
2-6. This loss marked his fourth consecutive defeat since Wimbledon and led to
his decision to part ways with Patrick Mouratoglou. The French coach had
started working with Rune during the suspension of Simona Halep due to doping
regulations.
"After
much speculation and uncertainty in Holger Rune's camp, his long-time trainer,
Lars Christensen, will rejoin as the sole coach of Rune. They have begun
working in Denmark, and he will start traveling with Holger from Beijing,"
read a tweet regarding their reunion at courts.
Rune will
be competing in the Davis Cup qualifiers this week, facing off against Brazil, team
who had players like Thiago Seyboth Wild and Thiaago Monteiro. 20-year old
tennis player will serve as the top singles player for Denmark, with the second
spot likely going to Elmer Moller, a promising 20-year-old Danish tennis player
currently ranked world No. 403.
His next
tournament will be the ATP 500 Beijing Open, where he is seeded third and will
compete against 18 of the top 20 players in the world, excluding only Novak
Djokovic and Hubert Hurckacz.
Following
the Beijing Open, Rune will travel to the Shanghai Open, where he will be the
fourth seed. This tournament also marks the return of Djokovic to the courts,
adding more excitement to the event.
