France has defeated Switzerland on the first day of the ATP
Davis Cup Group Stage Finals in Manchester.
The two countries form Group B alongside Great Britain and Australia and are competing at the AO Arena in Manchester from September 12-17. Some have called this group the "strongest" overall, meaning France and Switzerland's head-to-head provided plenty of entertainment to fans.
Team France is made up of World No. 34
Adrian Mannarino, World No. 36
Ugo Humbert, Arthur Rinderknech, Benjamin Bonzi, Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
Meanwhile, Switzerland's team is made up of three-time Grand Slam champion
Stan Wawrinka, Dominic Stricker, Alexander Ritschard, Leandro Riedi, and Marc-Andrea Huesler.
Humbert-Wawrinka clash
One of the highlights was Humbert's clash with Wawrinka. The 25-year-old Frenchman soared past the 38-year-old Swiss player in straight sets, 6-4, -6-4. In one particularly impressive moment, Humbert won 15 consecutive points in the second set.
This win followed Mannarino's victory against Stricker. The 35-year-old lost the first set 3-6 but fought back to win the match 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
This comes after Humbert was defeated by Matteo Berrettini in the opening round of the US Open, while Mannarino was ousted in the third round by tenth seed Frances Tiafoe.
Tennis TV praised the former on X, formerly known as Twitter, writing:
"Stunning
@HumbertUgo stuns Wawrinka 6-4 6-4 to seal the tie ahead of the doubles for France!
#DavisCup," they wrote.
The commentators were equally impressed.
"It is victory for Ugo Humbert. It is victory for the French on the opening day of action here in Manchester. The perfect start to their stay," they said.
