Casper Ruud defeated Pedro Sousa at the 2020 Argentina Open to lift his maiden ATP Tour trophy as the youngest play in Buenos Aires.

After an unsuccessful beginning of the season in Australia, it was a splendid time spent in Argentina for the Norwegian. Ruud began his campaign at the Argentina Open with victory in two sets over Andujar. Then he managed to outplay Carballes Baena without losing a set and continued also against Lajovic. Ignacio Londero was the only player who took a set away from Casper in Buenos Aires in the semifinal but did not stop him from reaching the final.
In the final, Ruud met Pedro Sousa. His task to win the first ATP title got much easier when Diego Schwartzman withdrew from the tournament and so he faced lucky loser from Portugal who is 145th in the ATP Ranking.
And Ruud did not hesitate for a single moment during the final. He kept a really high level of his game during the match as he did not allow his opponent to have a single breakpoint. On the other hand, he had up to 4 out of which he converted 3 to get 6-1, 6-4 victory.
“I’ve always looked up to Rafa a lot and players like him and Thiem, they play with great intensity and in some matches. When you look at them, they’ve kind of already won the match, it seems like, before they walk on the court because their opponent knows it’s going to be so tough to beat them on clay,” Ruud said. “That’s a point I would like to get to in my career. When I step on a clay court, [I want] the guy on the other side of the net to think, ‘Oh, this guy is a really, really good player and I’ll have to play my best tennis for three hours if I’ll have a chance to beat him.’”
