Former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek will celebrate 20 years this time around as
Rotterdam Open tournament director but admits that one of his regrets is a recent one back in 2021 as he snubbed
Carlos Alcaraz for
Andy Murray in the wildcard stakes.
Murray is part of a lot of conjecture and questioning at the moment due to his displays on the court and supposedly tarnishing his legacy. But due to his status in the game, he has always been a hot ticket, while Alcaraz was on the rise and Krajicek admits that is one that went against him as the Spaniard soon made his breakthrough following that.
But hindsight is a wonderful thing and it is a lesson that taught Krajicek who has handed Dino Prizmic for instance a wildcard for this years' tournament who took Novak Djokovic to the limit at the Australian Open and has seemingly learnt his lesson from snubbing Alcaraz.
“Sometimes things go well, sometimes things go against you. In 2021, Alcaraz asked for a wildcard to play in Rotterdam. I preferred to give that to Andy Murray,” Krajicek told Langs de Lijn En Omstreken.
"You don’t want that to happen again, to say ‘no’ to tomorrow’s number one.”
