World No.1 Novak Djokovic suffered a disheartening loss to Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of the Australian Open, leading tennis fans worldwide to dig deeper into the statistics behind the loss.
The Serbian fell to an inspired Sinner in four sets on Rod Laver Arena, as the Italian displayed some of his best tennis to send his rival packing. Djokovic's loss would be his first-ever in the semifinals of the Australian Open, and his first loss at the Melbourne Major since January 22, 2018, when he lost to Korea's Chung Hyeon in straight sets.
Following Djokovic's loss, it was discovered that the duration between his two losses in Melbourne was 2,195 days. On a related note, Carlos Alcaraz did something similar at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. The Spaniard defeated Djokovic 1-6 7-6(6) 6-1 3-6 6-4 in the final on July 16, 2023. With the Serb's previous loss at Wimbledon being a walkover against Tomas Berdych on July 12, 2017, the difference in terms of days is exactly 2,195, the same as the difference between his losses at the Australian Open.
Tennis fans were quick to get wind of this fact, with several expressing their thoughts and opinions on Twitter.
"Some things are just written in the stars. Behold Carlos and Sinner, the future of tennis is secured," wrote a fan.
"Finally next gen has arrived. First Carlos now Jannik. The era of Goats is near the end. First Roger, then Rafa and now Novak . I’m going to cry," wrote another fan.
"The king dethroned at his two best slams by the two chosen ones," chimed in a third fan.
