Novak Djokovic after 2195 days has his streak over at the 2024 Australian Open with the thorn in his side once again proving to be just that in Jannik Sinner who produced an utterly sublime display to dump out the World Number One who will not be Australian Open champion this year.
It will not be Grand Slam no.25 and it will not be Australian Open no.11 as Sinner will face Daniil Medvedev or Alexander Zverev in the final on Sunday morning who face off shortly with a potential first time Grand Slam champion in the offing after a 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 demolition job from the Italian. ATP Finals, Davis Cup Finals and now Australian Open. Forza Jannik.
The first two sets saw Sinner utterly dominate Djokovic who like in previous matches this tournament looked poor, albeit under the barrage of the superb Italian. He had created zero break points and won 12 return points all match going into the third set albeit he stared to play better and started to finally test Sinner after going down 6-1, 6-2 in the opening two sets.
The serve in particular was knocking Djokovic off the park as he had won 79 per cent of his first serves in the opening set, 92 per cent in the second set and even at one point in the third set 100%.
The third set went with serve and sat at 5-5 with one member of the crowd even collapsing as the players composed themselves. Djokovic returned and landed an ace before holding serve and guaranteed himself a tie-break and potential foothold in the tie at 6-5. One that Sinner set by making it 6-6. Djokovic had never played a Grand Slam match where he wasn't able to fashion at least one break point and Sinner continued that streak. But mini disaster struck for SInner who was unable to convert match point and so had to go to another set.
Sinner had three chances to open the fourth set to break serve but Djokovic saved the day each time with an unstoppable forehand in particular followed by an ace showing he was not down and out. He made it 1-1. But Sinner finally broke as Djokovic continued to miss routine shots and Sinner found a winner from an impossible angle before breaking after it looked like a comfortable game for Djokovic. It was 3-1 and Sinner was heading towards the finishing line. He continued to hand Djokovic no opportunities and went 4-1 up as the Serbian started to run out of road. That he did as Sinner was given the chance to serve it out at 5-3. He sent his forehand away for a clean winner to claim the win to dispel any doubts that he would serve it out.
