Day One of
Monte-Carlo Masters is a slim affair with qualification concluding being the main order of the day with a few first round ties interspersed around them. Our
schedule and Preview looks ahead to Day One in the beautiful Monagasque region.
Ironically one of the best ties of the day comes from qualifying as David Goffin will take on Corentin Moutet for a spot in the first round. The Belgian is second seed in qualifying, while Moutet is 12th. They will face off shortly in Monaco for that spot.
Then it is the turn of Richard Gasquet who is on his farewell tour which kind of starts now given that it will conclude on the clay courts of Roland Garros. With the clay court action starting, Gasquet's run in begins. He was handed a wildcard for this week and faces Matteo Arnaldi.
A tough examination for a player who of course is more on his way out than up. Then it could get even tougher with
Felix Auger-Aliassime likely in the next round followed by potentially Carlos Alcaraz as they are the two seeds that lurk in the bottom of the draw.
Perhaps the game of the day follows as
Jordan Thompson faces big serving Frenchman,
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The Aussie is known as a bit of a spoiler to the big names while Mpetshi Perricard has been seen as the next big star of French tennis alongside current king Arthur Fils.
Albeit after a superb end to last season, it has semi stalled for him. He will hope to turn clay into his canvas and claim a tie with the defending champion
Stefanos Tsitsipas. Ironically he is in action following this. He will take to the main court for the first time since becoming champion. Albeit it will be in doubles over singles.
As ever he will play with brother Petros Tsitsipas as they have received a wildcard into this tournament. A little warm-up for him before he plays singles against the winner of that aforementioned tie.
Alexander Zverev also teams with Marcelo Melo in his men's doubles opener. While Jan-Lennard Struff will take on the yearly emergence of Valentin Vacherot also in the first round. A feature of this tournament in recent years, the winner faces either Nicolas Jarry or Grigor Dimitrov in the second round.
Most of the big names will play in the coming days but the opening few days are more of a pedestrian affair as shown with this schedule.
